When Summer Doesn't Feel Like Summer

By the time July rolls around, it can feel like everyone is outside living their best life.
Camping photos. Lake days. Family vacations. Kids running through sprinklers. Long evenings around the fire.
But the reality is that not everyone has a summer like this. And it's easy to look around and feel like everyone else is making memories while you're just... trying to get through the day.
In this field of work, we know that's not actually how life works.
As counsellors, in summer we sit with people who are grieving someone they love. People navigating divorce. Parents feeling burnt out. Couples struggling in their relationship. People dealing with anxiety that hasn't magically disappeared because it's sunny outside. Families facing illnesses they never saw coming. Life doesn't wait until November to get hard.
Sometimes the heaviest chapters of our lives happen in the middle of July. And somehow that can make them feel even lonelier.
There's something strange about carrying deep sadness while the rest of the world feels like it's in vacation mode. You can almost start wondering if you're missing something.
"Why is everyone else happy?"
"Shouldn't I be enjoying this?"
For every family posting photos from the lake, another family is sitting in a hospital room.
For every person planning a wedding, someone else is planning a funeral.
For every child excited for summer break, another child is trying to make sense of parents who are separating.
Joy and heartbreak exist at the same time. They always have.
If you're finding this summer harder than you expected, you're not doing anything wrong.
You don't need to force yourself to feel grateful because the weather is nice.
You don't need to pretend you're okay because everyone else seems to be.
You don't need to wait until September to ask for help.
Sometimes counselling isn't about "fixing" anything. Sometimes it's simply having one place each week where you don't have to hold it all together. A place where you don't have to say, "I'm fine," because everyone else is having a good summer.
If this season has felt heavier than the people around you realize, we want you to know you're not alone.
At Talking Helps Heal, we provide counselling for children, teens, adults, couples, and families in Cranbrook and Kimberley, as well as virtual counselling across British Columbia. Whether you're navigating grief, anxiety, relationship challenges, burnout, or simply carrying more than most people can see, we're here to walk alongside you.
Not every season of life feels like summer.
And that's okay.
You can book a free consult to meet with a therapist in Cranbrook, Kimberley, or online if you're elsewhere in B.C. at www.talkinghelpsheal.com
