"Is it valuable to work with practicum therapists? Will I get anything out of it?"
Finding the right counsellor is a really personal thing, and we know cost can be a big barrier for a lot of people. At Talking Helps Heal, we’re passionate about making counselling more accessible, which is why we offer low-cost sessions with our practicum counsellors and student therapists. And here’s something important to know: working with a student therapist isn’t about “settling” for less. It can actually bring a lot of unexpected value to your experience.
The Real Value of Student Therapists
Fresh training, fresh perspective & solid background:
Our student therapists are deep in their learning right now. They’re soaking up new research, techniques, and ways of looking at healing. They’re grounded in the latest understandings about trauma, identity, mental health, and relationships. Because they’re still in the learning process, they also come with openness, curiosity, and a lot of heart. They’re not set in a specific way of doing things. They’ll meet you where you are, without assumptions. They've also started their practicums with us after completing heavy educational requirements including an undergraduate degree, all the coursework for their master's in counselling (or psychology) program, and are now getting the hands on clinical hours with clients as the FINAL step before completing their master's programs and becoming fully certified therapists.
Connection matters more than certifications:
There are so many different therapy approaches out there — EMDR, CBT, DBT, parts work, and more. But study after study shows that the relationship you build with your counsellor is what actually creates change. Feeling safe, supported, and truly seen is more important than the letters after someone’s name. You can absolutely find that kind of connection with a practicum counsellor.
A team approach supporting you:
When you work with a student therapist here, you’re not just getting one person’s support. Behind every practicum counsellor is a whole team — experienced supervisors, mentors, and the collective wisdom of our practice. We work closely together to make sure your care is thoughtful, ethical, and grounded in best practices.
What We Offer at Talking Helps Heal
We know how important it is to find the right fit. That’s why we offer a free 50-minute session with any of our student therapists. This gives you a chance to meet them, get a feel for how it is to sit together, and decide if you want to continue. No pressure at all.
If it feels like a good match, you can move forward with low-cost sessions that make ongoing counselling more accessible.
A Final Thought...
At the end of the day, therapy is about building a relationship. It’s not about finding the "perfect" therapist on paper — it’s about finding someone you feel comfortable being real with. Our practicum counsellors bring compassion, curiosity, and real dedication to the work. We’d love to introduce you to them and help you find a space where healing feels possible.
